A Run of Sorts

22nd February 2017 seemed like any other lethargic, laid back and sultry Sunday but the evening had something else in store. Enthusiastic runners from all over Manipal poured in, at the KMC Greens. A promo- run, for the marathon to be held on 5th March 2017, by the Manipal Runner’s Club definitely livened the evening up with quite a buzz at the site of action. To bring a smile on more faces, Dr. Girish and Mrs. Roopa from KMC brought along a few children from the neighboring Government School and Bijapur slums to share the fun.

The event kick-started with a briefing on the details of the run and a few useful tips by Mr. Dharma, a robust pro-marathon runner. He explained that the run had 3 main objectives: serving as a promo event for the marathon in March, creating awareness about the disease retinoblastoma and promoting REVELS (upcoming MIT event).

After the motivational speech, the expectant runners were energized by a few warm-up exercises by Ms. TimTim Sharma, India’s youngest and fastest female marathon runner from Bangalore.

Runners assembled at the starting point beside the Sharada clay courts, and then began the arduous run. The large 4km circuit covered most of the important areas in Manipal like End Point Road, Syndicate Circle, MIT, Fortune Inn, etc. The fast-paced crowd was followed by a small retinue of Campus Patrol jeeps. It was a sight to behold as the colorful runners adorned the streets of Manipal. They sure did give their best and managed to complete the tiring circuit.
