TechTatva’17: Behind The Scenes With System Admin

While iON and WebSIS might have been a huge burden to deal with, MIT’s very own Ethan Marcote-like developers are always happy to help. System Admin and Web Development is the department that puts the tech in Tech Tatva (apart from App Dev, of course).

MTTN had the privilege of speaking to the Category Head, along with the Coordinators. Here’s what they had to say.

MTTN: So what is it exactly that you do?

We run the fest. Every category depends on us. Because any data that goes from one place to another goes through a portal, which is in turn made by us. Be it infodesks, operations, outstation management, T-shirts, Conclave, etc. everything has a portal behind it and we are the ones who run it. Apart from this we also handle the data regarding the event schedules which the App Dev teams later on use to make the app. Additionally, the Tech Tatva website is handled by us and we try our best to ensure all our work being bug free.

MTTN: How many people do you have working in your team?

We have 28 organisers apart from the seven of us. And an additional 24 volunteers per day. But the thing is that volunteers don’t know many things yet. So we try our best to help them learn about web development and all the operations that we do.

MTTN: For how long have you been working on the portals and websites? Have you faced any difficulties?

We’ve been working for around two months on this. When it comes to issues, we’ve not really had too many of them. Apart from the internet giving up on us every now and then, the college has been supportive along with some other categories as well. In fact, the graphics team has helped us on numerous occasions and we’ve all stayed up together all night getting work done.

MTTN: Who came up with the idea for the website? Was it your team or the general public?

Well, after several weeks of brainstorming, we came up with the idea ourselves. Initially however, the plan was to have the website show a map of the college and have a character travel from one place to another depending on the event. But then we realised that the college laptop would not have enough memory to support this, so we scrapped the entire thing and used simplicity as the key.

MTTN: How have you incorporated this year’s theme, ‘Realising Fiction’?

We spend a lot of time on personalizing the website to suit the theme, actually. We wanted the website to have a very mystical look to it, hence the stars and the silhouette of the tree in relation to the theme ‘Realising Fiction’.

MTTN: What do you think about this year’s Tech Tatva as opposed to the ones that have taken place previously?

Participation was actually quite low this time around, there was no thrill factor. However, maybe that’s because it has been only one day so far. Let’s see how things go, maybe it will pick up tomorrow.

MTTN: Thank you so much for your time and thank you on behalf of all of MIT for your efforts.

Nethraa Kannan, for MTTN.
